ABSTRACT

This chapter presents shorter studies of a few other countries in which household survey data on urban and rural areas were available. We have selected Zambia in East Africa and Sierra Leone and Cote d’Ivoire on the West to supplement the extensive discussion of Kenya and Ghana given in the previous chapters. It will be seen that the rural-to-urban migration patterns in Zambia are closer to those observed in Kenya, than those observed in the West African countries of Sierra Leone, and more importantly Cote d’Ivoire which are closer to the Ghana case — and the extent of the rural-urban earnings gap are closely related to these different patterns.
