ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes the major lessons of Slovenian internationalization through outward foreign direct investment (FDI) and points out potential future challenges. It explains what can be learned from Slovenia's internationalization story in macro and micro points of view; what experiences may be applied to other transition economies, what are the special features of Slovenia and what is expected to be common for all transition economies. The effects of Slovenian outward FDI show that the relocation of activities abroad to lower wage countries is taking place slowly and simultaneously with the restructuring of investing firms. The Slovenian case clearly indicates that the internationalization of activities of firms from transition economies is gaining in momentum and that they can do it in spite of all the limitations and sceptical claims that only inward FDI is relevant to them.
