ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the research methodology. It describes the process by which the behaviorally-anchored rating scales (BARS) were developed. The chapter presents the independent and dependent survey measures. It discusses the analytical models used for the data analysis. The environmental pressures and issues facing the companies in the sample were very different as they were head-quartered in a variety of countries and operating in different industries. Thirteen environmental policies were used to measure employee perceptions of organizational support for environmental activities in the firm. There were a range of policies statements provided in the questionnaire beginning with a question regarding the employee's knowledge of the existence of a published environmental policy and ending with policies of sustainable development and social equity. The chapter presents a step by step description of the survey development process highlighting the thorough use of both theory and consultations with managers and employees to create and validate the BARS portion of the survey instrument.
