ABSTRACT

The Health Promotion Department, Lanarkshire Health Board, in partnership with North and South Lanarkshire Councils, introduced a mental health promotion initiative into local primary schools to coincide with Scottish Mental Health Week and World Mental Health Day 1997. Having participated in the initiative, the schools believed that it was appropriate to begin to raise awareness of mental health issues within the primary school setting. Promoting positive behavior support material was considered important but proved less popular, as teachers believed that positive behavior would result from active and structured play. The teachers supported the issue of the voucher, as they could see that the Admission Voucher supported the Healthy Living message within the school curriculum. Consequently for the support material to have the greatest impact, schools need to be sent information at the end of term before the summer holiday or upon return after the break.
