ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how psychoanalysts conceive of master conflicts and their association with some of the major male sexual disorders. Psychotherapy techniques focus on increasing ejaculatory control and reducing performance anxiety. This is to be achieved by providing psychoeducation to both the male and his partner and utilizing a series of masturbatory and penetrative sex techniques. Premature Ejaculation can "result" from dyadic distress emanating from poor communication and power and control struggles or be the "cause" of general relationship difficulty. Delayed Ejaculation is conceptualized by the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders-5 as the following: significant delay in ejaculation, and pronounced infrequency or absence of ejaculation. A combination of psychotherapeutic treatment techniques often recommended for Delayed Ejaculation are: cognitive behavioral strategies to reduce anxiety; challenge interfering sexual scripts; increase confidence; insight-oriented strategies to promote differentiation; and couple-focused work to promote intimacy and mutuality.
