ABSTRACT
Modem environmental consciousness can be seen as a new, quasi religious doctrine of the western type. The ‘religion’ of environmentalism emphasizes the wonder of creation, contrasts this with the alienation and folly of humans which urgently need to be replaced by reconciliation and wisdom, and looks forward either to a ‘saved’ (ecologically balanced) world or to the hell of an environ mental armageddon if we do not repent our ways.
