ABSTRACT

Table 3 details the membership composition of the union groupings. The CTU's strength is mainly in social services (teachers and social workers) and in transport and communications, with a smaller presence in manufacturing and construction. The largest affiliated union is the Professional Teacher's Union, with 56,000 members in schools, colleges and universities.2 The FTU is stronger in manufacturing and construction, and has significant membership in most sectors, although it is relatively weak in community, social and public services. The TUC has particular strengths in the restaurant trade, in transport and in some sectors of manufacturing. The remaining independent unions are found mainly in the community, social and public services, with significant independent union membership also in transport and communications, trade and construction, and to a lesser extent in manufacturing.
