ABSTRACT

At the beginning of 1972, UC-Berkeley was working against a January 15 deadline to get their letter of response and affirmative action plan into the HEW office. Then HEW would prepare a letter of findings. Betty's presentation at the AAAS symposium on women in academia had gone well. The organizer was anxious to publish the papers in a proceedings and asked Betty to send a copy of hers as soon as possible, even if it wasn't yet in final form, so that publication planning could proceed. Betty was a member of the AAUP which has the mission of 'advancing academic freedom and shared governance, defining fundamental professional values and standards for higher education, and ensuring higher education's contribution to the common good'. On January 31, after four weeks of discussions, an agreement was finally reached where UC-Berkeley would allow HEW investigators into the personnel files.
