ABSTRACT

I considered the data collection methods and techniques used in this study to be evolutionary because each set of data acted as a signpost for, or a determinant of, the following data collection phase. Subsequent methods were not developed until I had absorbed the essence of students' experiences and identified the best way to capture their ongoing development. Each method enabled students to address key issues raised in previous phases and allowed constructs to be identified. The phases were analogous to a signpost because they offered me direction and represented the different journeys; the 'becoming' journey for the students and my own hermeneutic journey.
