ABSTRACT

On the one hand, a strong national identity and national pride may lead to a negative attitude towards the euro, because the euro will replace the national currency. An attitude based on national identity is expected to be negative, and rather holistic and unstructured. On the other hand, the attitude towards the euro may be based on economic expectations, the perception of advantages and disadvantages or costs and benefits of the euro. Citizens taking these aspects into account have a more analytical attitude towards the euro. The impact of national identity, national pride and economic expectations on the attitudes will be tested with data collected in the EU nations during the summer of 1997, in the context of a cross-national study (Muller-Peters et al, 1998; Van Everdingen and Van Raaij, 1998). With the cross-national data, comparisons can be made between the EU nations that will adopt the euro or not.
