ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to document the overall employment situation of disabled people in Britain today. It gives a specific account of the employment position of visually impaired people. The chapter describes the experiences of the visually impaired physiotherapists. The environment can, be adapted and people are beginning to accept the idea that disabled people should not be solely responsible for managing disability, but rather that it should be regarded as a social and political phenomenon. The major response of government to the employment of disabled people has been one of persuasion aimed at employers. Employers are unlikely to spend time and money installing technology for people in low status, unstable, or part-time work where disabled people are frequently employed. The specific needs of disabled people may be subsumed within a general equal opportunities policy. The Disability Discrimination Act was passed in November 1995 on the 14th attempt. Disability is defined in terms of impairment which is, defined very narrowly.
