ABSTRACT

The term regionalism has two quite different meanings for the Latin American nations: (1) /w/ra-regional co-operation within the framework of the Latin American Integration Association (LAIA) and several subregional groupings (such as Mercosur, the Andean Community, or the Central American Common Market,) and (2) /«/er-American or hemispheric co-operation involving the United States. In the preceding chapters, I have examined the revival of intra-regional co-operation in the 1990s and the prospects for the emergence of a South American Free Trade Area (SAFTA) as an autonomous trading bloc. In this chapter, I will consider different scenarios for South American and hemispheric regionalism at the turn of the millennium.
