ABSTRACT
Over the past three decades The Journal of European Economic History has been a vital forum for the analysis and investigation of economic problems, particularly as regards the history of finance and banking in Europe. Its contribution is widely appreciated. It was as an extension of this solid tradition that the journal decided to promote the research project whose results are now being presented: an inquiry into the course of developments in eight countries of the European Union during the twentieth century.
