ABSTRACT

This chapter examines hierarchies within corporations, for example the corporate hierarchy within Coca-Cola Canada or within the Royal Bank. It discusses hierarchies of corporations, for example the hierarchy of Canadian airline service industries, with Air Canada at the top and local carriers at the bottom. The chapter looks at hierarchies of corporations in Canada and the world. It discusses that the traditional corporate ladder dates from the stone ages of the industrial revolution and that it is no longer appropriate to the modern corporation. The chapter explains that the corporate ladder is an essential and necessary part of any modern corporate structure. It argues that all companies are of necessity organized hierarchically and as a consequence it is imperative: to examine hierarchical structures critically, to understand hierarchical structures, and to be able to respond to, monitor, and effectively manipulate hierarchical structures.
