ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about corporate hierarchies earlier and hierarchies of communities. What has not been mentioned is the idea that very often we may expect to find corporate hierarchies within hierarchies of communities. It simply reflects the inter-connectedness of the corporate world and the world of communities. It describes the relative size and positioning of all large Canadian communities in a single picture. It was suggested earlier that we should keep in mind that the Canadian urban system can be considered as just a small part of the larger North American urban system. In spite of the interesting perspective afforded by the merged listing of American and Canadian metropolitan areas, it is difficult to talk seriously about the future of Canadian communities without discussing the future of the jewels of the Canadian urban system, namely Toronto and Montreal.
