ABSTRACT

This chapter describes and analyses the 'kenniswijk' project, an innovative project in the city of Eindhoven that aims at speeding up the development of the information society in a designated area with a population of 84,000. It draws the background and aims of the project. The chapter describes the several elements of the project: the way citizens are connected, how they are equipped with infrastructure, and what services will be developed. It focuses on the notebook project at the Eindhoven University of Technology. The chapter discusses the organisation of the project and the importance of regional organising capacity as success factor in these type of projects. The e-city began as an initiative of the Dutch government, notably of the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunication. The e-city project has two main components: infrastructure/access provision and service development. A unique strength of the Eindhoven region is the cooperation between government, business and knowledge and education institutes.
