ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the question, what kinds of human capital are available in Russian rural households that are associated with greater or lesser economic and psychological adaptation for their members? The sampling design of the panel study provides us with an opportunity to examine at the micro-level how household structure, which is a form of social capital, affects the ability of a household to secure human capital, in the form of household labor. The strongest potential for household labor is found in demographic type five households that are comprised of couples, their children and other adults. These households showed the greatest gain in household labor potential during the three years of the panel study. Moreover, the number of households in the demographic type with the highest household labor potential, couples with children and other adults, increased more in Latonovo and Vengerovka than in Bolshoe Sviattsovo.
