ABSTRACT
William <ackson Hooker (1785-1865) was a leader of British botany for five decades, and for about half that time he and Watson were regular correspondents. Hooker deserves much credit for encouraging Watson’s studies, and Watson responded initially with much gratitude and little criticism.
