ABSTRACT

The authors sought throughout their interviews to learn how Millennials view the larger, "globalizing" world, and their opening questions sometimes prompted them to discuss global issues. They asked questions about specific international issues: globalization, extreme poverty, fundamentalism in the Muslim world, global warming, the war in Iraq, several important countries and regions, and their view of the United Nations. Nearly half the respondents initially said they did not know what "globalization" meant or didn't know enough about it to have opinions – though some offered comments in response to the interviewer's explanation. It would be unreasonable to expect young adults not majoring in history or international relations to be very well educated about the causes and nature of world poverty. Overall, a majority believe that the planet is dangerously warming and support measures to reverse the trend. Several respondents who had spoken against religious intolerance earlier in the interview said they oppose fundamentalism in all religions.
