ABSTRACT
Through ages the Nordic North has served as a specific source of inspiration for researchers and travellers and especially for geographers. The written and celebrated past of the North is a heroic one and, in addition, a central cause for the initial institutionalization of Nordic geography as an academic discipline during the 19th century.
