ABSTRACT

The objectives of an extension service are of prime importance for specifying what the organization is intended to accomplish. According to the Government of the Punjab, the stated aim of agricultural extension is 'achieving improvement in agricultural production through better coordination, education of the farming community to adopt the latest production technology.' The T and V system introduced into the public sector was in line with the strategy envisaged in the sixth five-year plan for increasing agricultural productivity. Ciba's agricultural division in Pakistan is at the forefront of the private firms involved in extension work and lists the following objectives: to introduce new pesticides on to the market; and to provide facilities to the dealers. In Pakistan, the organizational structure of Ciba is much less complex and cumbersome than that of the private sector. In the Department of Agriculture, the supervisory or leadership style adopted by the upper level management is unquestionably bureaucratic.
