ABSTRACT
In this chapter, the authors explore the role of local history museums, a term they use to describe museums that may focus on city, state, or regional history or heritage, and the resources and roles they play. Similar to most local history museums, the History Center's exhibits focus on local cultural, economic, social, and political history. The History Center, which is part of the Minnesota Historical Society, also offers lectures, community events, and forums for important community issues. Most local history museums provide insights into the oral and social histories of the people or groups who immigrated, as well as its more famous citizens. In addition to providing insights on local history, these museums also provide opportunities for visitors to contextualize larger events in US history by providing a local or regional context, as well as to provide opportunities to explore the role of local citizens in larger national and international events.
