ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on both quantitative and qualitative evidence to develop an account of the evolving social networks in which Language and Social Networks Abroad Project participants were engaged during their time abroad. It presents quantitative findings from the Social Networks Questionnaire (SNQ) which participants completed at Insojourns. The chapter analyses sojourners' overall network size, with a particular focus on the contexts where contacts were made and on the languages used. It introduces a Social Network Index for each language which summarizes different aspects of SNQ data, provides an overview of social network change over time, and can be used to explore relationships between social networking and L2 development. The chapter examines how the insojourn domestic setting and early leisure contacts facilitated network formation. It also examines different types of insojourn social contact. The chapter examines the maintenance of relations with family and friends from home.
