ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores Bangladeshi Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs). It examines the interactions between field workers and their clients and between field workers and their immediate superiors. The book discusses the client/field worker interface, the motivations of the field workers, and the clients' perceptions of the services of their NGOs. It details field workers' opinions of their NGOs' activities and policies, and of 'development'. On a worldwide scale, NGOs are gaining increased attention and resources from policy makers, donors, academics and others. 'Donors' are the sources of 'overseas aid' for countries like Bangladesh. They include multilateral bodies such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, northern governments and private foundations. During the 1980s, donors started to turn away from a state country which had been the recipient of almost all 'development' aid and advice.
