ABSTRACT

Transcendental theism is essentially a form of subjective idealism which, however, recognizes knowledge of God to be essential if it is to adequately ground the relatively progressive form of liberalism which it wants to defend. The defence of philosophical knowledge of God is an argument for the possibility, necessity and reasonableness of revelation. The dispute with dialectical materialism regarding the existence of God and the nature and role of religion will take place, rather, in the cosmological, metaphysical and ethical arenas. Dialectics is first and foremost the method of dialogue – of dialogue which interrogates existing scientific and philosophical trends regarding the principles behind and the implications of their teaching. The result is a progressively more adequate grasp of the principle which is sought, coupled with a recognition that the production of knowledge is always an ongoing dialogue in which even the best attempts can be improved.
