Grilles Kepel1 says the 'demand for Islam' - as shown by the growing number of mosques since the late 1970s - stems from the realization by many Muslim immigrants that they are settling for good in the host countries. For a lot of them, this involves affirming a religious identity there by providing themselves with the means to practice their faith.
