ABSTRACT

Mailing list of the two mutual-aid organizations was obtained with consent of their executive committees, and two sets of identical questionnaires were sent to all of their full and affiliated members. Most adoptive families lived in a comfortable housing environment. Return rate among the Chinese mutual-aid organization members was 82%, the non-member was 41%. Return rate was 38% for non-Chinese members, 23% for non-members. The high response of the Chinese respondents suggested that they might have chosen to express their feelings and opinions towards adoption through the research because such channels were limited in Hong Kong at the moment. Almost half of the male respondents (48%) and one-third of the female (35%) reached university and above education, showing that many adopters were highly educated. Protestants and those having no religion made up a high percentage of the respondents.
