ABSTRACT

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) represents a psychiatric syndrome in which an individ ual experiences a severe anxiety reaction to an overwhelming psychosocial stressor “outside the range of usual human experience” (American Psychiatric Association, 1987). Hallmarks of PTSD include reexperiencing of the traumatic event, avoidance of stimuli associated with the event, psychological numbing, and persistent symptoms of increased physiological arousal.
