ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book explains the mechanisms through which European policy making can influence the organisational aspects and decision-making patterns of national political systems. The newly consolidated European transport policy stands in stark contradiction to the Italian tradition. The book discusses European Common Transport Policy (CTP) along with the type of pressure that it may create for member states. It shows that the Italian transport policy in 1985 stood in contradiction to the CTP. The book presents the more recent changes which have improved the link between Europe and Italy. It explains why there has been no fundamental move towards adaptation. The book explains the absence of a counterfactual development, this approach explains the path-dependent development at the national level to be a product of the state capacity and the structure of the interest intermediation.
