ABSTRACT

Matrix Management is a term normally used to describe an approach that uses ‘borrowed’ project team members who report to a Project Manager on project matters, and to their normal Line Manager on all operational matters, such as ‘pay and rations’. It can be very successful in organizations with a fair degree of project orientation. Such organizations may be less likely to face some of the problems outlined below, which might sidetrack sporadic users of a matrix approach. Figures 44 and 45 show typical structural differences between a hierarchical or functional approach and a matrix approach.
