ABSTRACT

TruckdriversareinvolvedinadisproportionatelyhighnumberofNewZealand's fatalcrashes.Despitetheimportanceofthisgroup,verylittleresearchhas investigatedtheroleofhumanfactorsinthesecrashes.Thecurrentstudy investigatedtherelationshipthatcrashinvolvementamongsttruckdrivershadwith twopersonalitytraits(driverselfishnessandmildsocialdeviance),aberrantdriving behaviour(violations,errors,lapsesandaggressiveviolations)andsafetyclimate. Theviolationsfactorwastheonlydirectpredictorofcrashinvolvementamongst truckdrivers.Therelationshipwassuchthataoneunitincreaseintheviolations factorscoreincreasedtheoddsofbeingcrash-involvedby49percent.Inaddition, testsformediationeffectsrevealedthatonedimensionofdriverselfishness,mild socialdevianceandsafetyclimateallindirectlyaffectedcrashinvolvement. Possibleavenuesfordecreasingtruckdrivers'crashinvolvementarediscussed alongwithsomeideasforfutureresearch.
