ABSTRACT

Anexploratorysinglecasestudydesignexperimentwasconductedinorderto investigatethemanipulationofthereliabilityofAutomaticCruiseControlandthe subsequenteffectsontrust(alongwithusability,usageandacceptance).Therewas noeffectofautomationonspeed,roadpositionorheadway.Thiscouldbedueto theconstraintsofthesimulatorprogrammeandexperimentalparadigmofthe trials.Howevera'moderate'leveloftrustwasstillpresentevenatatwentyper centreliabilitylevel.Furthermoretherewasno'spreading'ofdistrustofgapacross totheset-speedfunction,butthereweredifferencesintheusability,usageand acceptanceratingsofthetwofunctions.Thusthepresentstudysuggeststhatitmay bepossibletotrustonecomponentofACCevenifthesecondcomponentisnot perceivedastrustworthy,withareflecteddifferenceinusability,usageand acceptabilityratings.
