ABSTRACT

Given demographic increases in the number of elderly drivers and their need for mobility, the driving research community is concerned with elderly drivers' issues and their risk exposure. The authors' approach consists of helping drivers to anticipate forthcoming difficulties due to age. This paper is concerned with theoretical issues in improving age-related performance impairments. It is articulated around the descriptions of age effects and the French driver retraining programme which exists in France. The concept of metacognition is presented and then two moderating restraining factors are discussed (overestimation of driving ability and self-efficacy beliefs). This paper aims to clarify the methods of improving awareness amongst elderly drivers before any retraining session, and it also aims to list the tools necessary to achieve this.
