ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the health needs of black people in South Africa in order that an area for intervention could be identified. In the research respondents identified a whole range of areas in which services are needed-health and nutrition centre for under fives, services for elderly people, services for terminally ill people, health education, counselling, economic activities, literacy/numeracy and many more. It is unlikely for centres initiated by community groups which are aware of these needs to remain focused only on curative services. The sharing of information enables people to evaluate their own projects in comparison with what other people are doing elsewhere. Listening is not only essential when people talk about their problems but also when they talk about their success. In general people like to talk about their work.
