ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the context for a study of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial data sharing beliefs and behaviour. It sets out the technological context by giving an overview of GIS. The chapter considers the special characteristics of the spatial data that are used in GIS applications. GIS are information technology applications that depend upon the availability and use of digital spatial data. It outlines the players involved in spatial data generation and use. The chapter presents the concept of a spatial data infrastructure to co-ordinate spatial data-related collaboration among organisations. It outlines the institutional set-up for the distribution of spatial data in South Africa and provides details about the national spatial data infrastructure in South Africa. In South Africa, considerable GIS investments have been made by the public sector. The use of GIS in the public sector has become increasingly pervasive.
