ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the different ways to peace, not only of education for peace, in order to indicate that the situation today necessitates a broad approach that can integrate several aspects in theory and practice such as social, cultural, political, moral, religious and educational factors. This approach needs interdisciplinary inquiry to connect the social sciences, cultural theory, evolutionary theory, ethics, theology and philosophy of education. From an analytical point of view, 'education' can be categorized in three directions: intentional education; functional education; and indirect education. The chapter integrates all these three educational forms. The basic step of all public efforts to promote peace, including education for peace, is the clarification of moral and religious criteria, with history and memory as indispensable sources. The chapter finally argues that the propensity for aggression, violence and warfare requires encompassing and integrating efforts to promote reconciliation and peace.
