ABSTRACT

This chapter offers subject-specific advice on developing every aspect of theoretical, applied, or position papers, including: the title, abstract and keywords; method, results, and discussion sections; referencing; finding the right journal and submitting a paper; revising content in light of peer review; presenting papers. Journals require one to follow their own guidelines for the layout of the manuscript, but in general, it is necessary to use headings similar to participants, instruments, procedure, and data analysis. Many journals are becoming fussier regarding the Institutional Review Board (IRB) statement, often requiring that specific declarations are made. The chapter demonstrates that whatever tools have been used are carefully selected and will measure what they are supposed to measure, and ensuring that enough detail has been included to explain how these tools are useful. It also explains how the data were analyzed accurately. Other areas of physiology might also have very lengthy data analysis sections.
