ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the design of numerous items which commonly occur in both the Mining and the Oil & Gas industries. It presents a brief introduction to the use of Space Gass as a design tool. Space Gass is probably the most commonly used steel design package in Australia. The package can be used for the design of concrete and steel connections; however, it is traditionally a tool for the design of steel members in accordance with AS 4100. The chapter also presents a brief introduction to the use of finite element analysis (FEA) in structural engineering. It presents basic concrete and steel designs with a linear and non-linear example. Composite structures use steel beams to add strength and stiffness to reinforced concrete slabs. The design of composite beams and slabs should be completed in accordance with AS 2327.1 or AS 5100.6.
