ABSTRACT

In counseling and therapy, each session is dynamic, and clients’ responses cannot be anticipated, similar to an exchange in a chess game. This challenge makes each session novel and transfixing. To be able to stay abreast of this challenge, a therapist trainee must be familiar with the major theoretical underpinnings of most important skills and techniques. Armed with the knowledge, therapist trainees are more likely to creatively blend various skills and techniques into their own creative responses, as in an art form. These major theoretical frameworks include:

Relational–cultural therapy

Interpersonal therapy

Dynamically oriented therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy

The experiential therapy

Strength-based therapy and self-efficacy

Solution-focused therapy and narrative therapy, and interpersonal neurology
