ABSTRACT

Installation artist; metal constructions. He attended Chelsea College of Art (1979-83). His metal constructions often have a potential for practical use or for further accidental development as they are installed on site, either in interiors or out-of-doors. He has exhibited widely in Britain and in Europe in Lausanne, Basel, Lisbon, Rome, Berne and Paris, notably at CREDAC d'Ivry in Paris and at the Fondation Suisse. For the HenryMoore Institute's studios at Dean Clough, Halifax, he built a massive installation of walkways and platforms constructed from steel mesh and scaffolding, interspersed with other, nonfunctional forms creating extra spaces. His novel C-Bin containers developed from this project, and at Selsey one was installed on the beach to contain flotsam and jetsam brought in by the sea; another such project is for containers on Mount Everest, to collect accumulated rubbish. His bins become solid forms as the débris builds up inside them. Land Bin (1998, galvanized steel, enabled by Sculpture at Goodwood) comprises two semi-circular open grid containers facing each other on a circular site. They are designed to receive garden and woodland maintenance refuse until their form is completely invested with leaves, grass-cuttings and twigs deposited there by the gardeners of the estate.
