ABSTRACT
As the center of political power since the founding of the People's Republic in late 1949, Beijing also served as the focus location for science and technology development through the mid-1960s. By 1965, a total of 55 universities and research institutes were located in Beijing, concentrated principally in the northwestern district known as Zhongguancun (Figure 8.1).
