ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book describes the role of using a sociological theory to mediate between conflicting opinions about urban road pricing and the choice of design options. It provides a background to urban road pricing and establishes that a theory, applicable to choosing between road pricing scenarios, did not exist. The book argues that the best method to develop a theory would be using qualitative sociological research techniques. It analyses the data, making use of excerpts from transcripts to enhance reflexivity, to develop a grounded theory of the acceptability of urban road pricing. The book explains the patterns in how respondents use the strategies are discovered, which reflect arguments that all respondents find acceptable. It describes that drivers that switch to park and ride should pay less than their counterparts that continue to drive.
