ABSTRACT

Logistics data are collected, processed, and reported through a logistics management information system (LMIS), increasing the likelihood of an adequate supply of all products for all customers. LMIS provides managers with the information they need to react or, more important, the information they need to anticipate customers' requirements. An LMIS database can be used for more than managing day-to-day distribution of contraceptives; it can be manipulated for programmatic and managerial purposes that benefit the overall family planning programme. For public health and family planning policy makers, an effective LMIS is especially important because it: enhances customer service, reduces commodity costs, improves programme management, improves programme policy decisions, improves the accuracy of procurement decisions, and provides better control and accountability. LMIS data are used to control supply chain operations and regulate the flow of products from manufacturers to end users. A top priority for every LMIS is to collect and report accurate consumption data.
