ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book provides a very general overview of contemporary youth as well as the specific features of post-communist Russian youth, a decade after the collapse of communism. It illustrates the usefulness of utilizing the concepts of 'risk' and 'risk society' when examining the position of contemporary Russian youth. Risks, which are typical in other countries, also impact upon Russia and its process of social reproduction. Analyzing the problem of integration of youth, the book shows that social integration is not just possible in a risk society but absolutely necessary for the existence of youth as a social group and for the maintenance of society as a whole. It outlines the peculiarities of the mechanisms of social integration under conditions of uncertainty and risk. Thus at the start of the twenty-first century, risk is a common characteristic of contemporary society.
