ABSTRACT

This chapter describes that the people behaved rationally each time when elections were held in a free and fair environment in establishing democracy in South Asian countries, particularly in Bangladesh. There could be democratic development in countries like India, Bangladesh and other South Asian nations if the political actors and institutions behave democratically. The chapter focuses on an extreme case of political turmoil and chaos made by the politicians in Bangladesh while the country was moving forward towards a stage of democratization. Ideally Bangladesh is a suitable country for majoritarian-plurality/ first past the post model of electoral system because of the following reasons. These reasons include Bangladesh is mostly a homogeneous society, its political system is unitary, the legislature is unicameral and the governmental system is parliamentary. In a mixed system there may be majoritarian representation in one chamber of a bicameral legislature and proportional representation in another chamber.
