ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an implicit issue by exploring whether geography matters in determining patterns of African employment in Iberian labour markets. It analyses African involvement in labour markets by type of municipality. The chapter examines African employment patterns in diverse economic activities in different local economic structures. It also examines African employment in municipalities with dissimilar labour market characteristics in Portugal and Spain separately. The chapter discusses patterns of African employment are compared in the three main local settings in Girona: agricultural, service and manufacturing-based towns. It focuses on that farming has an area of influence which goes beyond the limits of agriculturally-based municipalities. The chapter shows that commuting from service to farming areas which is observed for Africans is not seen for other workers. The town has the highest unemployment rate of the province. There are many unemployed workers in the locality who take on unskilled jobs.
