ABSTRACT
The fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the cold war will undoubtedly be defined by future historians as events which played a significant part in determining twentieth century history. The collapse of communism and German reunification caused shock waves throughout international relations and it was clear that their effects would reach far beyond 1989. These events seriously challenged the rules of the international system which had been developed following the end of the Second World War.
