ABSTRACT

The main purpose of this chapter is to describe and compare the everyday life of young people in the Republic of Karelia and the region of Northern Karelia. The study data has been collected by a questionnaire survey conI ducted in the Republic of Karelia and Northern Karelia during 1995 and 1996. The total number of respondents was 1,731, consisting of 942 RusI sian and 789 Finnish young people from 14 to 39 years of age, although the majority of the respondents were in the age-range of 16 to 24 years of age: 99.7 per cent of the Russian students and 94.4 per cent of the Finnish stuI dents belong to this age group (see chapter 1, Table 1.5).
