ABSTRACT

We cannot know the story of our future in advance, but our images of the future can be both meaningful and functional when making decisions relatI ing to the future life. The images we use to structure, understand, and interI pret ourselves and the environment can be referred to as constructs (Kelly, 1955), frames of reference, or meaning systems. All these terms refer to the perceptions, beliefs, values, assumptions or attitudes, which actively shape our interpretations. These constructs are based on previous life experiI ences, but people also add other material, like hopes and dreams, to create actively images that bear on personal future life.
