ABSTRACT

Acceptance of our limitations often brings with it the search for a sense of purpose. In religious terms, this means an attempt to link oneself to an ultimate principle, an eternal raison d'etre. Personal meaning is achieved through faith and commitment. Alternatively, acceptance can have a humanistic focus, in which case we are compelled to make our own meanings. It is known that both the Russians and the Americans have spent vast sums in testing certain paranormal phenomena. The Central Intelligence Agency, for instance, has been particularly interested in 'remote viewing' experiments. There have been some very exciting results reported from the Stanford Research Institute where a subject claimed that he could see a 'ring' around Jupiter similar to those surrounding Saturn. J. Nickell, a former magician now turned academic, organized a task force of 11 researchers from different disciplines to look into the whole issue of psychic sleuthing.
